The present focus is on Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Jajpur districts. With very severe cyclonic storm Yaas predicted to cross the Odisha coast between Bhadrak and Balasore districts, the State government on Tuesday expedited evacuation of people from low-lying areas and brought more areas under its disaster management operation.

BHUBANESWAR: As cyclone Yaas is likely to hit the landmass near Dhamra and south of Balasore on Wednesday morning, Odisha government on Tuesday launched a massive evacuation in the coastal villages of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur districts.
Operations at Dhamra and Paradip ports were completely suspended since Monday in the wake of the approaching cyclone. While Dhamra port that is on the path of the cyclone hoisted signal number 10 indicating ‘great danger’, Paradip port has hoisted signal number 4.
Dhamra port sources said all vessels berthed at the ports have been freed and the people around a two-km radius of the port area have been evacuated to safer places.

Paradip Port Trust (PPT) suspended its operations from 2 pm on Tuesday as part of safety measures in view of the impending severe cyclone Yaas , which is likely to cross Odisha coast on May 26, an official said.
At least 12 vessels proceeded down to the deep sea so as to avoid the path of the storm, he said, adding that all the trucks, dumpers and large cargo handling equipment in the port area will be taken to a safe zone.

They were trying to cross the border at night, fearing lockdown
Seven migrant workers, including two women and five children, were missing after two boats capsized in Sileru River in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on May 24.
The incident took place when over 30 members of migrant families were trying to sneak across the Odisha border at night, fearing lockdown clampdown. Three persons managed to swim ashore, while the body of a child was fished out.
