Rep. John Katko is facing the first organized pushback from within his own party over his vote to impeach former president Donald Trump for inciting a violent mob to storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
A group of about 40 Republican and Conservative party leaders and donors met privately at a Syracuse restaurant last week to discuss whether to continue supporting the congressman or to back a primary opponent.
Political appointees don’t deserve six-figure salaries to run elections (Your Letters)
Updated Dec 10, 2020;
To the Editor:
Should political appointees make over $100,000 in Onondaga County? The answer is a resounding no! We call the top administrators at the Board of Elections “commissioners,” but they are little more than political figureheads of the two major parties. How do you become an elections commissioner? Michele Sardo needed the support of the Onondaga County Republican Committee and to be voted on by the Republican Legislature Caucus. Same protocol for Democratic appointee Dustin Czarny. Neither of the “commissioners” need bipartisan support or a vote from the Legislature for their positions. It is purely partisan, political patronage. No political appointee in Onondaga County deserves to make $100,000 when the rest of us continue to struggle through this pandemic.
