With spring mushroom season just around the corner, it’s time to learn some new foraging skills or sharpen what you already know. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is hosting three wild mushroom clinics this spring and summer, as part of its Outdoor Skills Academy classes. Hosted by outdoor enthusiasts Jill and Aaron Grenchik, participants will learn to identify a variety of Michigan’s edible wild mushrooms and pick up tips on where to start looking for these often-elusive forest treats.

And with over 11,000 inland lakes, there are plenty of places to give it a try. John Zakrajsek, a seasonal interpreter, for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and helps teach ice fishing recommends that beginners find a mentor to teach them the ropes. “If you’re at all interested the best thing you can do is hook up with somebody that is an avid ice fisherman,” Zakrajsek said. “They can shorten your learning curve and make your learning experience a whole lot more enjoyable.”

If trekking out onto a frozen lake or river, drilling a hole and waiting for fish to swim by is new to you, the DNR Outdoor Skills Academy has you covered with Hard Water School classes that will boost your ice fishing know-how. Introductory ice fishing classes are coming to the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center at Mitchell State Park in Cadillac. The one-day class will run on Feb. 20 and March 6.
