Ian King has a lot to get off his chest. The native of County Antrim is the chief operating officer of ZeroIgnition, a firm which spent a decade developing a fire-retardant chemical for use in construction materials before launching it in the lockdown-stricken year of 2020.
But, during an hour-long phone call on a rare sunny afternoon in March, King (pictured) barely mentions the pandemic. What has caused the most upheaval to ZeroIgnition’s long-term business plan is something else entirely – the government’s Brexit deal.

Number of products in high demand now includes host of materials including cement and steel
A shortage of construction materials such as timber, steel and screws is likely to get worse before it gets better with firms told to plan for increased demand and longer delays.
A joint statement from John Newcomb, chief executive of the Builders Merchants Federation, and Peter Caplehorn, chief executive of the Construction Products Association, warned demand for construction products both in the UK and globally meant problems in getting hold of products will continue throughout the year.
