Report from REAL planning committee recommends replacing Brandt Centre

The Brandt Centre’s days could be numbered. The city’s executive committee discussed the future of the 43-year-old multi-use event centre Wednesday, debating whether to renovate the current building or just build a new one. Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) started taking a closer look at the future of the Brandt Centre in 2019, before developing an Arena Planning Strategy Committee (APSC) in 2020, comprised of community leaders and stakeholders. The APSC presented to council three options the building could be left as is, $40 million could be used to upgrade it, or a new arena could be built. “The reality of it is, (the Brandt Centre) is 43 years old and like anything that’s 43 years old, it was built for 30 to 50 years,” REAL CEO Tim Reid said.

Iceville hosts last skate of the season

Giant ice rink coming to Mosaic Stadium

(Sandra Jackle/Twitter) Riderville is becoming Iceville for the next few months. Regina Exhibition Association Limited has turned the field inside Mosaic Stadium into a super-sized outdoor rink. “We started this at the start of December and we’ve had a crew of about 24 working around the clock,” said REAL CEO Tim Reid. The ice surface is 165 metres long and 65 metres wide  about 110,000 square feet of ice. While preparations are still underway, about 350,000 gallons of water have been used. “A traditional arena is 17,500 square feet so it’s a lot bigger than a normal NHL rink,” Reid said. Reid said they were planning on holding a winter festival but COVID-19 caused that to be postponed, so this was the idea they came up with to make use of the facilities.
