With not much happening this winter due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many people embraced the outdoor activities that have looser restrictions in place like outdoor rinks, skate paths, and ski hills. For Asessippi Ski Resort just north of Russell, Manitoba a large chunk of its business comes from Saskatchewan with it located less than half an hour from the border. Assistant GM Shannon Johnston said they saw an impact on business as a result of the Manitoba border restrictions. “We have a lot of season pass holders who are on the border and are just as close to us as Russell, Manitoba. They’re about 15 minutes away, so we have a lot of people that are contacting us about their season pass. We’ve never had a full tracking of how many people come from Saskatchewan and how many people come from Manitoba, but if the refund requests that are rolling in to my desk are any indication, I think we’re going to have a bit of a hit to us we should have

Keeping it Strong in Fernie
Fernie COVID-19 cases are down to two from 97, showing the local community has worked hard to flatten the curve and will continue to do so.
It became evident as a result of the local COVID cluster announced in late January that stronger communications were needed at a local level. One of the initiatives was the unique, yet simple website launched in early February called www.FernieStrong.com.
“Tourism Fernie wanted to be involved in helping the community in any way it could. We’ve been messaging the PHO orders and restrictions since March and have a vast array of marketing tools so we felt creating FernieStrong.com in partnership with the Chamber, the ski resort and local health officials and businesses was a great way to help,” exclaimed Jikke Gyorki, Executive Officer of Tourism Fernie.
The education blitz, which includes a website, digital ads and direct contact with resort employees and season’s pass holders, was announced Friday by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, which said it worked with the Canada West Ski Areas Association, WorkSafe B.C. and municipal governments from six resort towns. However, no government funding is being dedicated to the information campaign, with the ski industry association and individual resorts responsible for getting the message out. The Opposition Liberal tourism critic, Teresa Wat, said public-health messaging clearly isn’t getting to the small number of rule-breakers which is why stepped-up enforcement might be the only way to get through to them.

Skiers and snowboarders should knock off the apres ski parties and follow COVID safety rules if they want their local ski resorts to stay open.
That’s the message being sent by B.C.’s ski industry before the Family Day long weekend in the hope that an information campaign targeting skiers and resort employees will be enough to tamp down the surge in COVID-19 cases in resort communities like Whistler.
