Hutchinson Community College names Young Kansan Award winners

Two outstanding Hutchinson Community College students were recognized as the 2021 Young Kansan Award winners at a ceremony on campus on Wednesday. The students were also honored during the College’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, April 30.
Karina Ayala (Scott City) and Zach Shanline (Pratt) were selected from a field of students nominated for the honor. The Young Kansan award recognizes the outstanding male and female graduate each year at Hutchinson Community College, and is chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration at the college.
The award is sponsored by RCB Bank. Each winner received a plaque and a cash honorarium in recognition of their achievements.

The Nebraska Cornhusker’s 2022 roster will feature a recruit with a national title to his name. All-tournament center Blaise Keita led his Coffeyville Red Ravens to a NJCAA title.
Keita, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound center who will remain in junior college through next season before joining the Huskers in the fall 2022, helped deliver Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College a national title Saturday night with his game-high 27 points and also added nine rebounds.

Brandon Burgette set the bar about as high as possible in his first year as men’s basketball coach at Kansas City Kansas Community College, winning the Blue Devils’ first Jayhawk Conference championship in the 51-year history of the league and earning a berth in the canceled NJCAA national tournament.
Running off a record eight straight wins, the Blue Devils claimed the Jayhawk title with an 8-2 record and then dethroned defending champion Johnson County 75-68 to win the Region VI championship for only the second time over. After starting 2-8, the Blue Devils won 16 of their last 21 games.
