The Australian cruise community is calling on the government to follow Canada’s example by bringing forward the end of its cruise suspension.
On Thursday, the Canadian government said it would end its suspension on cruising early, giving a new date of 19 November 2021.
The country joins the US, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where cruising has already resumed under stringent new health protocols and testing regimes.
Joel Kats, managing director for Australasia at the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), said Canada’s announcement highlighted the lack of progress in Australia.
“Like Australia, Canada has taken a very conservative and risk-averse approach to cruising, but they’ve worked hard with industry to develop a detailed pathway towards resumption and economic recovery,” he said.

A federal court voted to stay a judge s decision ruling that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cannot enforce COVID-19 cruise ship rules after July 18.
The CDC win came after the state of Florida had sued the agency claiming that its restrictions on the cruise industry during the pandemic effectively blocked most cruises - harming the state s livelihood.
Earlier this month, the CDC asked a federal appeals court to U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday s June 18 ruling on hold after he ruled in favor of Florida.
The rest of the world is back cruising, but not Australia

Canada’s decision to welcome cruise ships back to its waters from November 1 has placed the Australian government under renewed pressure from the powerful global cruise industry, which has been in talks to resume cruising here for over 12 months.
Earlier this year, the local industry said it had strong signals from the government that Australia would be welcoming back a small number of foreign-flagged cruise ships with fully vaccinated crew, for local bubble cruises from March.
As of November 1, cruise ships can return to Canada, which is good news for the economies of harbour cities like Vancouver.
