Barnstaple town and district councillor Ian Roome remembers Prince Philip’s last visit to North Devon in 2011, where he was present at the homecoming parade of Chivenor’s Commando Logistic Regiment to celebrate their safe return from Afghanistan.
Councillor Roome said: “We were extremely honoured when His Royal Highness Prince Philip visited Barnstaple to take the salute of the men and women from the Commando Logistic Regiment as they marched past a dais on the Strand in a triumphant procession to celebrate their safe return from Afghanistan.

During the early phases of the training, the sun barely rises, while temperatures can plummet as low as -30C

Royal Marines have been deployed to brave Arctic temperatures as they learn the basics of survival in winter weather training.
The soldiers will undergo a series of intensive trials during the Cold Weather Warfare Course including being plunged into freezing water during infamous ice-breaking drills.
All those taking part have undergone quarantine and UK troops are training in a bubble and in line with the Covid-19 guidelines of the host nation of Norway, the Royal Navy said.
