My bloodline and culture comes from Bears Ears, my clan migrated through that area. If your eyes are open, the evidence is everywhere. Former President Trump wanted to diminish our connection to Bears Ears but President Biden has the power to set the record straight. We trust him to get this right. –

Monday May 24, 2021 Over course of a few days last week, a group of ten runners traversed 360 miles from Bears Ears National Monument to Warm Springs Park in Salt Lake City. The run wasn’t a competition, or some sort of adventure challenge. The young Indigenous runners were moving across the state for healing, unity, and resiliency.  Today on the news, we speak with Lynda Jim, a Diné activist and board chair of SLC Air Protectors about the Running as Medicine event. Plus, declining levels at Lake Powell – the second-largest reservoir in the U.S – have spurred officials in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico, to search for ways to prop it up.

Bears Ears National Monument: A home for all

By BRUCE NOBLE I recently had the privilege of visiting Bears Ears National Monument with Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk, a member of the with Ute Mountain Ute tribe. During our time together, she pointed out landscape features and explained their importance to her people. Seeing Ute Mountain, the Blue Mountains (or Abajos), and the Bears Ears on the surrounding horizon amounts to something powerful in her culture. These cardinal points help to anchor the Ute Mountain Utes to the Earth. Regina’s grandmother, Stella Eyetoo, lived as a child in the Allen Canyon portion of the Bears Ears area. In her later years, Stella’s home on tribal land in White Mesa, Utah included a comforting view of the twin buttes that comprise the Bears Ears. Stella was pleased when President Barack Obama designated Bears Ears National Monument on Dec. 28, 2016 because she knew that her childhood home in Allen Canyon would be protected.
