Faculty members of the University of Karachi (KU) on Monday protested the beating of their colleague allegedly by students of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and its guards recently.
A complete strike was observed on the call of Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts), the body s president Dr Shah Aliul Qadir said.
He added that all academic activities remained suspended at the city’s biggest public sector varsity as teachers boycotted their classes.

In its campaign against the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) decision to abolish the two-year bachelor’s and master’s programmes, a Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts) delegation met Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) convenor Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Wednesday to seek the party’s support in raising the issue.
Headed by its president Prof Dr Shah Ali Ul Qader, the Kuts delegation informed the MQM leaders that the HEC’s decision to abolish the two-year degree programmes is tantamount to playing with the future of students.
“It will affect over 100,000 students every year,” Qader pointed out. He demanded that the HEC’s two-year degree programmes should be reinstated because tens of thousands of students will be unable to complete four-year degree programmes.

Adviser to the Sindh chief minister on universities and boards Nisar Khuhro announced on Wednesday that varsities in the province would continue to offer two-year undergraduate programmes, slamming the federal Higher Education Commission s decision to discontinue the programmes.
Earlier, the HEC had announced the ending of two-year undergraduate programmes, replacing them with semester-based four-year degree programmes. The HEC would not be recognising any two-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees awarded after 2018.
Addressing a press conference along with Professor Shah Ali Alqadir of Karachi University Teachers Society, University of Karachi (KU) syndicate member Prof SM Taha and Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association representative Prof Yaqoob Chandio, Khuhro dubbed the HEC s decision an attack on provincial sovereignty.
