Pittsburgh reacts to verdict in trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin Gregory Deffenbaugh
UPDATE: 5:35 p.m. - The Fraternal Order of Police have released a statement, following today’s news out of Minneapolis, MN.
“This is not an incident that involves Pittsburgh Police Officers, it’s policies, or tactics. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to comment on an incident that does not involved it’s officers or members of FOP Ft. Pitt Lodge #1,” Robert Swartzwelder, Fraternal Order of Police.
UPDATE: 5:30 p.m. - The Pittsburgh Penguins, as an organization, have released a statement concerning the outcome of the Derek Chauvin trial.
Veteran civil-rights activist Tim Stevens says he didn t authorize his appearance in this attack ad.
The first real attack ad of Pittsburgh’s mayoral campaign aired by the kind of outside-spending group that local politicos have been expecting landed this week. And one of the people feeling stung by it isn’t even a candidate.
“We felt like our credibility was at stake,” said Tim Stevens, a longtime Black civic leader and founder of Black Political Empowerment Project, after seeing himself appear in an ad attacking Bill Peduto.
Stevens appears for about two seconds in the spot, created by a union-backed committee called Pittsburgh Justice for All.” Though he is not named in the spot, he can be seen asking “for whom is [Pittsburgh] most livable?” a statement Stevens says was excerpted from a 2019 press conference on health outcomes for Black women in the city. No one on Pittsburgh City Council is opposed to enacting legislation to ban no-knock warrants in the city.
But council members Wednesday delayed passage of a proposed bill until it can iron out any legal issues with the law and meet with community members who are lobbying for it.
Bans on law enforcement agencies serving a warrant without announcing their presence have been lobbied for across the country since the March 26, 2020, shooting death of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky. Taylor was shot by plainclothes officers who entered her boyfriend’s apartment to serve a warrant that was part of a drug investigation.
