Pourakarmika’s family gets Rs. 5 lakh solatium cheque March 7, 2021 Mysore/Mysuru: Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman M. Shivanna and Mayor Rukmini Madegowda yesterday handed over Rs. 5 lakh cheque to the family of Pourakarmika who died during Corona crisis. Vasantha, wife of Suresh, a deceased Pourakarmika, received the cheque. Shivanna said he came to know about non-payment of compensation to the family of Suresh, who died in the line of duty last year, through a newspaper, and instructed officials to arrange for payment immediately. “The Commission’s endeavour is to extend all facilities to families of deceased Pourakarmikas and accordingly, Rs. 5 lakh cheque has been disbursed. 

Civic worker s death: Safai Karmachari commission chief to visit Maddur

Updated: Share Article AAA Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission chairman M. Shivanna will visit Maddur on Thursday following the reported suicide of a pourakarmika in the town. Mr. Shivanna will visit the house of Narayana, the 37-year-old pourakarmika who died on Tuesday, to offer condolences to the bereaved family. A meeting will be held in Maddur Town Municipal Council to take action against the persons responsible for pourakarmika’s death and for the payment of compensation to the family. The deceased pourakarmika had allegedly ended his life three months after he was forced to enter a manhole and clear it without any safety gear. The incident was reported in the media and an inquiry was ordered against his senior officials. Before his death, Narayana had alleged that his senior officials were harassing him to state that he had voluntarily cleaned the manhole without any safety gear.

Shivanna, chairman, Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission, said the commission would submit a proposal to the government for a survey to get the exact number of Safai Karmacharis, including manual scavengers, in the State. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, he said the commission has data of pourakarmikas and safai karmacharis in ULBs, but has to conduct a survey to know the exact numberin industries, ITBTs and private companies. It has directed the DCs to form district-level monitoring and vigilance committees to end manual scavenging across the State. The district-level committee shall meet once in three months, he added.
