Council announces £1million investment to kick-start tourism in town

Council announces £1million investment to kick-start tourism in town A council has unveiled a £1m package to kick-start the town’s tourism economy. On the day that the Government roadmap allows for the reopening of some parts of the tourism and hospitality industry, Blackpool Council has revealed an investment plan to help the resort recover from the near-catastrophic effects of the pandemic. The council has already declared that the traditional Illuminations season will be extended by two months until January 3, 2022, to enable businesses to recoup some of the losses they have incurred this year with the national lockdown wiping out the lucrative Easter period.

Blackpool and Southport air shows have been cancelled for the second year in a row

Both Blackpool and Southport airshows have been called-off amidst uncertainty over the staging of mass events.  Blackpool s free event, which attracts up to 100,000 visitors every year, was due to be staged on the Tower Festival Headland on the seafront over the weekend of August 7 and 8. Event organisers, Visit Blackpool, said that despite the gradual easing of lockdown measures and the progress made on vaccinations, there is still too much uncertainty relating to the staging of mass events during the summer months. Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture for Blackpool Council, Cllr Gillian Campbell, said: “This has been an extremely difficult decision to make, but throughout this pandemic our primary focus has been on protecting residents and visitors.

Blackpool Illuminations to be extended for another two months

Blackpool Illuminations to be extended for another two months Blackpool’s annual Illuminations display is to be extended by two months for a second consecutive year. VisitBlackpool announced on Wednesday that the Illuminations season will start on Friday September 3 and run until Monday January 3, 2022. The two-month extension is intended to give the resort’s hard-hit tourism industry an added boost with the Covid-19 pandemic expected to cause further disruption over the first few months of the year. It was also revealed on Wednesday that the winter extension will be complemented by a significantly enhanced, resort-wide Christmas offer. Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture for Blackpool Council, Cllr Gillian Campbell said: “Although last year’s extension was disrupted by tier restrictions and a second lockdown, all of the evidence showed that there was a huge appetite for the public to visit the Illuminations in a safe and enjoyable way.
