Californians who support a single payer health care system say it’s time for Gov. Gavin Newsom to keep his campaign promises and take steps toward making the model a reality.
Nurses at Maine Medical Center have voted to unionize, after a sometimes heated election concluded this week and after two failed attempts since 2000.
Ballots were counted Thursday night and tallied 1,001 to 750 in favor of representation by the Maine State Nurses Association and National Nurses United, according to the National Labor Relations Board. Nurses at the Maine Med campus on Portland s Western Promenade, the Brighton campus and the Scarborough Surgery Center will all be represented.
The mail-in election began March 29 and asked nearly 2,000 registered nurses employed by Maine Med to accept or reject collective bargaining representation. The deadline for ballots was Tuesday.
Critical shortages prompted companies to ration, clean and reuse disposable equipment.

On Saturday, April 17th, dozens of community members in San Diego participated in a car caravan demanding single-payer healthcare for California. The event was part of a statewide call-to-action issued by the California Nurses Association, and continues the mobilization for universal healthcare that began in February. An assembly bill introduced by the CNA, AB 1400, would represent a significant step toward universal health care in California. It’s scheduled to be heard in committee on May 22nd.

The San Diego car caravan was organized by the Peace and Freedom Party, the Party for Socialism and Liberation and also included a couple dozen supporters from the community who came out to participate or found the event while passing by and joined. Thousands of medical providers have died in the COVID-19 pandemic, many exposed and infected while caring for patients without adequate protection.
Critical shortages of masks, gowns, swabs, and other medical supplies prompted the Trump administration to issue guidelines for providers to ration, clean, and reuse disposable equipment. Thus, throughout the pandemic, once a week many doctors and nurses were issued an N95 mask, which is normally designed to be tossed after each patient.
