Ludwig wins 2021 Spector Prize | The Source | Washington University in St Louis

May 11, 2021 SHARE Each year, the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis awards the Spector Prize to a graduating senior in recognition of academic excellence and outstanding undergraduate achievement in research. The award is in memory of Marion Smith Spector, a 1938 graduate who studied zoology under the late Viktor Hamburger. Ludwig This year’s recipient is Ella Ludwig, a senior majoring in biology in Arts & Sciences. Ludwig was nominated by her mentor, Malia Gehan, assistant member and principal investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, who focuses on improving resistance to temperature stress. Ludwig’s thesis, titled “Assessing Natural Variation in

Class Acts: The champions for health equity | The Source | Washington University in St Louis

May 7, 2021 SHARE This week, Class Acts celebrates graduates who are working for health equity across the globe, in their neighborhoods and in examination rooms. Meet Gautam Adusumilli and Cory French, doctor of medicine candidates from the School of Medicine, and Keishi Foecke, who is set to earn an undergraduate degree from Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Gautam Adusumilli, co-founder of Empower Through Health, wants to increase access to diagnostic imaging. He considers the skill essential to becoming a radiologist and researcher in remote areas of the developing world.

Fournier to study dynamics of fast chemical reactions

Fournier Joseph A. Fournier, assistant professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, won a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation for his project “Direct Interrogation of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reaction Dynamics and Mechanisms with Cryogenic Ion and Ultrafast Vibrational Spectroscopies.” Fournier’s research program focuses on characterizing the dynamics and mechanisms of fast chemical reactions. Fournier is particularly interested in charge transport processes that are fundamental to chemistry and biology, but are currently difficult to study using standard methodologies. By developing novel techniques for studying very fast reactions, Fournier and his group aim to better understand biological processes like photosynthesis, energy storage and transfer and cellular respiration.
