NEW YORK: More than a year after Harvey Weinstein s rape conviction, his lawyers are demanding a new trial, arguing in court papers Monday that the landmark #MeToo prosecution that put him behind bars was buoyed by improper rulings from a judge who was cavalier in protecting the disgraced movie mogul s right to a fair trial. In a 166-page brief filed with a state appellate court, Weinstein s lawyers took repeated aim at Manhattan Judge James Burke, arguing that he swayed the trial s outcome with repeated rulings favourable to prosecutors - including a decision allowing additional accusers to testify about allegations that never led to criminal charges.

The starry cast of Aaron Sorkin’s 1960s courtroom drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” took the top prize Sunday at a virtual Screen Actors Guild Awards where actors of color, for the first time, swept the individual film awards.
The 27th SAG Awards, presented by the Hollywood actors’ guild SAG-Aftra, were a muted affair and not just because the ceremony was virtual, without a red carpet and condensed to a Zoom-heavy, one-hour broadcast on TBS and TNT. The perceived Academy Awards frontrunner Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” wasn’t nominated for best ensemble, making this year’s postponed SAG Awards less of an Oscar preview than it is most years.
At the Sag awards, Viola Davis won best female actor for the title role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom while her co-star, the late Chadwick Boseman, won best male actor for his portrayal of trumpet player Levee Green, his final film role before his death in August last year.
Also announced as winners were the British actor Daniel Kaluuya, best male supporting actor as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, and Youn Yuh-jung, best female supporting actor for her portrayal of a Korean grandmother visiting her family in Arkansas, in Minari.
The Oscars and other major award shows have come under increasing pressure for being dominated by white actors, writers and directors.
The cast of The Trial of the Chicago 7 took the top prize at a virtual, pre-taped Screen Actors Guild Awards, meaning that for the first time, Netflix has snagged the highest honour of Hollywood actors.
