Pic: Featureflash Photo Agency / Shutterstock.com Ann Roth, an American costume designer for films and Broadway theatre, has won the 93rd Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work in the Netflix drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom . At age 89, Roth has tied James Ivory as the oldest Oscar winner. This is Roth s second Oscar win, having won earlier for The English Patient in 1997.
Besides the two wins, Roth has been nominated on three earlier occasions for The Hours , The Talented Mr. Ripley and Places in the Heart .

Chloe Zhao has been named Best Director at the Oscars in a historic win that made her the first Asian woman and only the second woman ever to take home the trophy.
Zhao, 39, won for
Nomadland, about the traveling van community in modern America. She called making the film a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime journey .
It has been 11 years since Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the director Oscar, for Iraq war drama
The Hurt Locker.

Because the 93rd Academy Awards took place amid the Covid-19 pandemic, viewing audiences were already primed for changes and disruptions in the traditionally staid rhythms of the ceremony. But while the 2021 Oscars shook things up in terms of programming and presentation, arguably the biggest shake-up continues to happen in the categories themselves, as the field of nominees evolves every year.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has rapidly grown its membership over the past five years, with an eye toward increasing diversity within its ranks. And in 2021, the four acting categories in particular showcased more nominees of color than ever before.
