Based on the buzz of many film aficionados, 2020 seems to have been a strong year for film, especially where long-overdue diversity is concerned.
That said, it was also undoubtedly one of the most complicated years for the industry. That’s because the COVID-19 pandemic ensured that release schedules were repeatedly upended, with films dropping months later across theatres (where open), streaming services and/or premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms.
Therefore, you’d be forgiven for being at a loss as to where you can even watch most of these films especially in Canada, where the streaming market is even more fragmented than the United States.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its official nominations for the 2021 ceremony Monday. While these monumental nominations celebrate films of the last year, it’s also important to take a look at the state of cinema right now. The Academy’s announcement comes nearly a year after theaters shut down across the nation due to the coronavirus. Aside from a couple of bursts of business, the American theatrical industry has widely remained non-existent during this new age.

93rd Oscar Nominations: Here Are All The Animation And VFX Nominees
The Oscar nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards have been announced.
The Academy Awards will be presented on April 25, having been delayed from February 28 as a result of the pandemic. They will be held at Union Station and Dolby Theatre in L.A., and will air live on ABC at 5 p.m. PT. Given the ongoing restrictions, the exact format of the ceremony remains unclear.
Exceptionally, films that premiered on streaming platforms were able to qualify for the awards this year, because of disruptions caused by Covid. For the same reason, the Academy extended the end of the eligibility timeline from December 31, 2020 to February 28, 2021.
