This comes after the academy was forced to delay its 2021 awards show from February to April due to the coronavirus pandemic. The academy had also delayed the window of eligibility for this year s award show to Feb. 28. That decision allowed movies such as The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Judas and the Black Messiah to be considered for this year s awards.
The academy s board voted on Wednesday to approve an exception made for this year s award season regarding movie eligibility to apply for the 2022 awards as well. This decision will allow films that were supposed to be released in theaters, but were instead released for on-demand home viewing because of coronavirus-related theater closures to be eligible for an Academy Award.

As the world slowly returns to normal, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is looking forward to a post-pandemic Oscars but it will be a little later than usual next year, too. (Just not
as delayed as this year s COVID-delayed ceremony.)
On Thursday, the Academy announced that the 94th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 27, 2022, a month later than originally scheduled. This year s Union Station-set ceremony will also be a one-time only location change, as the awards show will return to its usual home at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

In another advantage for streaming, films can skip a theatrical release entirely for the second year in a row and still be eligible for the Academy Awards, which will next be held on March 27, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Thursday.
In making its decision, the organization cited a marketplace “still impacted by the pandemic.” Movie theaters in the United States reopened months ago with limited capacity. Cinemas in some areas of South America, Europe and Asia are closed or have only reopened recently.

This coming year will have 10-month eligibility period, while this past year had a 14-month eligibility period.
The 94th Oscars ceremony will move to Sunday, March 27, 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC announced on Thursday (May 27). The show was originally scheduled for Feb. 27, 2022.
Except for this past year’s pandemic-delayed show, which was held on April 25, the March 27 airdate will be the latest in the calendar year that the Oscars have been presented since 1995, when they were also presented on March 27.
The Oscars were held in March or April for 61 consecutive years, from 1943 through 2003. They moved up to February in 2004, and aired in February a total of 13 times between 2004 and 2020.
