Success: Leaders Unite Behind Clean and Safe Water

Goal: Support substantial boosts in funding for upgraded water infrastructure and clean water technology. The need for clean and safe water unites every human being. For millions, however, this basic necessity we often take for granted is out of reach. The Flint, Michigan water crisis first returned the need to fix America’s deteriorating water infrastructure into the national spotlight. Pleas for reform have ramped up after several natural disasters imperiled water supplies in multiple states.  This ForceChange petition brought attention to similar problems unfolding in communities of color. While Senators remain divided on overall infrastructure, they came together in rare but welcome bipartisanship to answer these urgent calls for action.

Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and 1st District Congressman David McKinley, R-W.Va., came in among the top 10 of members of Congress willing to work across party lines. The nonpartisan Lugar Center founded by former U.S. Senator Richard Lugar and the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University released their annual Bipartisan Index Rankings on Monday for the 116th Congress, covering 2019 and 2020. The index looks at members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and ranks members based on their willingness to work with members of the opposite political party. Lugar Center Policy Director Dan Diller said that despite the perception that the country is more politically divided than ever, individual members of Congress still worked together on numerous issues.

PORTSMOUTH PFAS, a growing environmental threat, has become an opportunity for Absolute Research Associates in Portsmouth. With accreditation from the state in April 2020, ARA became the only lab in New Hampshire to offer on-site and in-state testing of environmental samples for PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that ARA president Sue Sylvester called “an emerging contaminant.” Since 2000, ARA has provided environmental testing and consulting services, including certified laboratory services, indoor air quality services, and environmental project management related to contamination or suspected contamination of water, soil, and indoor air. Its customer base in the Granite State and the rest of New England includes commercial and industrial clients, engineering firms, municipal, state and federal agencies, as well as residential clients. ARA offers PFAS and other testing for homeowners concerned about their water, especially those with wells.
