The nation’s polity is twitching sequel to the extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) membership registration and revalidation exercise for a second time.
This is especially as some top shots and power brokers in the party are said to be uncomfortable with the development. But party officials say it is geared towards providing opportunity for more Nigerians to register with the party.
There are feelers that some APC bigwigs had tactically threatened the success of the exercise by allegedly hoarding materials and hijacking the process in some states in order to gain political capital.
APC group flays Bello, others’ ambition, opts for national chairmanship
The earlier North Central decides whether it wants the presidential slot or the national chairmanship position of the two leading political parties ahead of the 2023 general election, the better. Otherwise, the region stands the risk of not getting anything tangible on the platforms of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The zone, which includes Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa, Kwara, Niger and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), only tasted the highest seat of power when Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd.) became the military Head of State through the counter coup of July 1966. Since then, the highest positions North Central has attained since Nigeria returned to democratic governance is the national chairmanship of PDP and president of the senate under the APC.

PDP chides APC over extension of membership registration exercise

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has asked the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to stop pushing its membership registration exercise in the public space, saying Nigerians have lost confidence in its capacity to govern.
This is even as the PDP added that moves by the APC to declare another extension of the membership registration, “confirms that the entire exercise is a mere sitting room manipulation designed to produce a bogus membership figure.”
In a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party noted that it had nothing “but pity for the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led APC caretaker committee, which has become overwhelmed by the burden of producing an inflated membership register, following the rejection of the APC by Nigerians.”
