(WXYZ) â Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon passed Thursday evening surrounded by family after battling COVID-19 for several weeks.
Many in Wayne County, the city of Detroit and throughout the state honored Napoleon for his service.
âI cannot even begin to imagine a world without Benny in it, said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. He was a beloved, iconic, and respected law enforcement official. He was progressive and he was old school. He was tough and he had a heart of gold. But most of all, he was a genuine, caring, and loyal friend and colleague. I will miss him forever.â
Tributes poured in from across the region after the death Thursday of Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon amid his battle with COVID-19.
From the governor s office in Lansing to Oakland and Macomb counties, civic leaders and politicians expressed sorrow over his loss, with one police agency calling out the horrible disease that has taken that has taken so many good people. Others remembered him as a figure of strength in fighting on the frontlines of COVID-19.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said: “I cannot even begin to imagine a world without Benny in it. He was a beloved, iconic, and respected law enforcement official, said Worthy. “Gloves!” a Wayne County Public Health Division employee says.
“Can somebody take my picture? I wanna picture of this,” her partner says excitedly.
An insert is lifted out of a large box. What looks like fog streams out.
“And there it is,” one employee says as she peers inside. “That’s the box.”
An employee pulls out and opens a smaller box, removing a tray of the most precious cargo health department officials in Michigan have ever handled.
Their first shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Get a tray. We got two,” one of the employees says in a nearly two-minute video of employees unpacking the vaccine Thursday. “We’re all very excited.”

There are approximately 40 stations that can inoculate individuals simultaneously.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP The Verkuilen Building in Clinton Township has been transformed to help combat one of the largest public health emergencies in the nation’s history.
The spacious building, located on Dunham Road and right down the street from the Macomb County Jail, includes 40 vaccination stations that will immunize various members of the public throughout the course of the next few months.
Each station features basic sterilization equipment, such as hand sanitizers, and adheres to common social distancing guidelines. Lines are roped off and extend across different rooms.
