Health officials wrestle with vaccine hesitancy

Jordan | jack.jordan@gaflnews.com May 11, 2021 May 11, 2021 MOULTRIE, Ga. – Almost 20,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered but some officials say this is still not enough. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 6,590,354 vaccines have been administered throughout the state – 20,370 of those vaccinations have occurred in Colquitt County. The numbers encompass vaccinations given by Colquitt Regional Medical Center, pharmacies, doctor’s offices, Colquitt County Health Department and other privately licensed distributors such as businesses or nursing homes. While the numbers seem positive, people younger than 65 still need to be vaccinated, according to Dr. Charles Ruis, M.D., district health director for Health District 8 which encompasses Colquitt County.

Submitted photo MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Kiwanis Club of Moultrie proudly recognized the 2021 STAR Student and Teacher of the year at a recent meeting.  STAR stands for the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program, which recognizes Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in those students’ academic development.   Ashley Ma is this year’s Colquitt County recipient with a 1380 SAT score, coming in at the top of her class, and she chose Thad Brown as her STAR Teacher. Brown taught Ma honors Georgia studies in the eighth grade, but he’s now the graduation specialist at the Colquitt County Achievement Center.

Truck hits farm equipment on Cool Springs Road; 1 person hurt

Kishen Patel, of Norman Park, was treated for cuts on his left arm at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, according to the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office report of the accident. A hospital spokeswoman said he was treated and released the same day. Patel, in a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup, was traveling west on Cool Springs Road about 2:15 p.m. as Luiz Rodriguez, also of Norman Park, approached, traveling east on a 2019 John Deere tractor pulling equipment behind it.
