The stakes are high in Georgia’s runoff races for U.S. Senate. Republicans hold 50 seats and Democrats 48. A Bangor man has been sentenced to a year and one day in prison for threatening a Georgia congressman. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in west Michigan says 60-year-old Martin Dale Osborn in June of this year left a voicemail for Congressman Hank Johnson, saying “One day you are going to see me. It’ll be about two o’clock in the morning. I’ll be at your bedside and all you’re going to see is me knocking the living [expletive] out of you. Terrified? You should be.” Osborn referred to Johnson, who is Black, as “boy,” and specifically linked his threat to the congressman’s sponsorship of a gun control bill. As a result of the conviction, Osborn will be permanently barred from possessing firearms. After his release, he’ll be on probation for 3 years. During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney said every American has the right to express their opinion, but “no one has the right to threaten another with violence.”
