SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It s been just over a week since Gadsden Elementary School District (GESD) resumed in-person learning, and there s a disproportionate amount of kids not coming back to class.
Out of the district s nearly 5,000 children currently enrolled, only about 1,200 of them have returned to the classroom.
Perhaps some parents prefer their children to get an education from home, especially given the pandemic. According to the acting superintendent, Lisette Esparza, there s concern another wave of COVID-19 cases might be right around the corner.

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A San Luis resident and community activist is pushing for the removal of three Gadsden Elementary School District board members, saying the area deserves a respectable school district.
Gary Snyder is circulating recall petitions targeting Guillermina Fuentes, Gloria Torres, and Rosa Varela. A grand jury in December indicted Fuentes on ballot harvesting charges. Snyder says that s just one part of his motivation. I think as a school board member you have to recuse yourself so the school board itself doesn t lose their respect and credibility. he said.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A week-long Spring Break in March 2020 turned into a year of distant learning. Tuesday marked the one year anniversary of schools closing due to COVID-19 in Arizona.
More districts are opening up classrooms and shifting away from distant learning, but teachers like Lavon Pina, a language development teacher at Gary A. Knox Elementary School, have done everything in their power to make virtual learning not distant. It definitely was a challenge at first, but looking at where we ve come, from last March to now, these kids are rocking the technology in the classroom, Pina said.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma County on Friday responded to claims by the Gadsden Elementary School District (GESD) that health officials canceled a coronavirus vaccine clinic planned for its teachers.
In a statement released Wednesday, GESD wrote: Yuma County Health Department has informed Gadsden Elementary School District 32 that the February 24, 2021 vaccine distribution has been cancelled. Priority has been given to Yuma Union High School for the second dose. We have been notified by the Yuma County Superintendent office that GESD is tentatively scheduled for early March no specific date has been set.
