New school mural meant for drivers

A new student-made mural displayed at the intersection of Highway 1 and Kelly Avenue has a message for drivers: ease off the gas when passing schools. The 30-by-4-foot mural installed two weeks ago colorfully depicts students crossing the road using everything from bicycles to scooters to skateboards and wheelchairs. It also has a printed message to drive safely written in both English and Spanish. The district is planning a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony on Zoom on Thursday. The Cabrillo Unified School District received a grant from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority to be used for its Safe Routes to School’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Mural Project last spring.

Local schools to reopen next month

Cabrillo Unified School District students are set to come back as early as the first week of April after learning remotely for more than a year. At a special meeting on Monday night, Cabrillo Unified School District board members unanimously approved an amended elementary reopening plan, designating April 5 as the first day back for transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students. The decision came on the heels of a lengthy discussion at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting last Thursday night. The board declined to formally approve the plan until Monday night to allow for adequate board consideration and public input.
