DALLAS, April 08, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) First Liberty Institute sent a letter today to the City of Dallas informing city officials that they are misinterpreting a city ordinance by requiring OurCalling, a local church and homeless ministry, to obtain a permit as a Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS). However, the city also created a “buffer zone” that excludes OurCalling from participating in the TIWS program. The letter explains that putting OurCalling in a Catch-22 violates the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act (“TRFRA”) and asks the city for a religious accommodation to remove the threat to OurCalling’s ministry.
Calling Long Beach a welcoming community with a history of supporting immigrants, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to lease the Convention Center to the federal government to use as an emergency shelter for migrant children who are arriving unaccompanied at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The federal Department of Health and Human Services last week tapped Long Beach as a possible shelter location as convention centers in Dallas and San Diego have already been converted to emergency shelters.
With the council approval, the city will begin negotiating a contract with Federal Emergency Management Agency and Health and Human Services, which will operate the facility.

DALLAS The City of Dallas said Tuesday it has learned of 18 children who were vaccinated at the Potter s House.
The City said these individuals were under the age of 18 years, in the Dallas County registration database, and received an invitation to schedule a vaccination appointment.
The Moderna vaccine is only approved for people 18 years and over.
City officials said they have instituted a process to check each person s birthday twice before they are vaccinated, instead of the previous process, which just checked whether the person s name matched the person registered. We will be monitoring this process and make additional improvements as needed, the City said in a statement.

The city on Monday said in a statement said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has indicated it would like to move ahead with the plan for Long Beach, as convention centers in Dallas and San Diego have already been converted to emergency shelters.
The Long Beach City Council will review the proposal in a closed-session meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The discussion can happen behind closed doors because state open meeting rules allow for real estate negotiations to be discussed privately.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is expected to lease the property from the city, but the terms have yet to be set.
