Warning over Revenue scam calls People are being urged to watch out for a recent rise in Revenue scam calls. The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau says victims are receiving phone calls from a what appears to be a 051 Waterford number. The callers are trying to get personal information or bank details of the potential victim by claiming they are either owed a tax refund or a bill payment is required. Gardaí are advising anyone who receives a call claiming to be from Revenue to not give out any information and to hang up immediately as callers can be persuasive.

These are what are known as Voip numbers – computer generated numbers.   The caller will try to acquire the personal information/data or bank details of the potential victim. This attempt can vary but it is usually the following examples;

Public warned about scam calling pretending to be Revenue from 051 number

The following advice has been given to the public by the gardaí: Do not give out your credit/debit card, bank account, or PPS Number to anyone who makes unsolicited contact with you whether by phone or email. An Garda Síochána, Revenue, nor any Financial Institution will never call you and ask for your PPS number or bank account details. Never give away personal data to anyone or give assess to your bank account to unknown or untrusted people. Revenue will never ask a customer to provide personal details via phone calls, text messages, email or ‘pop up’ windows.
