Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò is ‘persuaded that we’re in a very dangerous time.’

When Viganò tried to clean up the parts of Vatican finances that he was tasked with overseeing, Pope Benedict XVI was pressured to have Viganò transferred to the U.S., where he then served as apostolic nuncio from 2011 to 2016.

Two years ago, the world learned former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick faced credible accusations of sexually abusing underage boys.
The Diocese of Metuchen and the Archdiocese of Newark in New Jersey revealed secret settlements had been made in 2005 and 2007 with former seminarians that McCarrick had preyed upon while he was the bishop in those dioceses. Somehow, despite revelations that several individuals had made internal complaints about McCarrick as early as the 1990s, he rose to become archbishop of Washington and a cardinal.
Even before he was ordained a priest, the Rev. Ronald Lange was sent to Ghana by his Catholic religious order in 1968.
In a profile by a community newspaper years later, Lange spoke of his commitment to learning about Ghana while teaching at schools there and leading a parish with more than a dozen worship sites.
“The people are just so happy to see you,” Lange, a member of the Society of the Divine Word’s Chicago province, based near Northbrook, was quoted as saying. “You don’t even have to be a good priest.”
And he wasn’t, as his order now acknowledges.

Cardinal Luis Ladaria, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, wrote a letter to the president of the U.S. bishops conference, Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez, regarding the conference s plans to draft a policy on the worthiness of pro-choice politicians to receive Communion. In it, the Vatican doctrinal chief gave a tutorial in what it means to be a bishop, a lesson that is sadly as necessary as it is embarrassing for the U.S. bishops.
Not only did Ladaria effectively derail those plans, he diplomatically asked, What the hell are you thinking? He is at pains to remind them how bishops should conduct themselves. The letter systematically pulls apart the rhetorical building blocks that had been assembled by the advocates of denying Communion to President Joe Biden.
