Coronavirus transmission within Austin s juvenile jail has been low among inmates, but some are calling for more testing as a buffer against an outbreak.
Travis County officials say they are being vigilant about precautions to reduce any spread of the coronavirus at the Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center, including taking the temperatures twice daily of the kids in the facility. But public defenders say they would like more youth to be tested. Unless the youth have some symptoms or they come into direct contact with somebody who tested positive, then they aren t getting tested, said Kameron Johnson, who heads Travis County s juvenile public defender office.
