President Donald Trump’s continued false insistence that he is the rightful winner of the 2020 election is culminating six weeks after Election Day with a widespread Republican embrace of an audacious legal effort to invalidate the votes of entire states – an attempt which, if successful, would inflict grievous damage on American democracy itself.
The mere fact that the attorneys general of Texas and 17 other GOP-led states, almost two-thirds of House Republicans, and the president have signed on to such a lawsuit calls into question the Republican Party’s very commitment to democratic principles, say critics of the effort, filed by the state of Texas to the Supreme Court.
Cybercrimes threatening global financial stability – IMF
The Director-General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva has said that cyber threats have the propensity of destabilizing the financial sector globally.
She explained that if for instance, a cyber-attack takes a bank down resulting in a drop in remittances, the entire sector will be badly hit.
Madam Georgieva said this during a virtual conference on Financial Inclusion and Cybersecurity Co-hosted by IMF, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, World Bank, and the World Economic Forum on Thursday, December 10.
She said “This brings me to a very important point: COVID-19 accelerates our digital advancements, and opportunities are multiplying at an even faster pace. But so are the risks. And if we want to harness the great power of technology to lift people up, we need to deal effectively with the threats that can bring technology down and harm lives and livelihoods.
While the Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara is a big victory for the North African kingdom, experts say the move is unlikely to result in widespread support for Morocco’s claim to the territory.
Moroccan forces and the Polisario Front, an armed group demanding independence for Western Sahara, have been fighting over the disputed territory – a vast area bordering Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria that was previously under the Spanish control – for decades.
In 1991, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire, but a planned referendum on independence was never held. The final status of the territory remains unresolved.
