Cornwall Wildlife Trust statement on Bartinney Downs fire St Just

Cornwall Wildlife Trust has said it is  deeply saddened by Monday s fire at Bartinney Downs Nature Reserve. Cornwall Wildlife Trust reported that over 120 acres of land has been burned to the ground as a result of a major gorse fire at Bartinney Downs Nature Reserve. Callum Deveney, Head of Nature Reserves at Cornwall Wildlife Trust, said: Controlled burns are an important way of managing heathlands, but they must be planned carefully and carried out at the right time of year. The fires that have burned at Bartinney Downs are nothing of the sort and couldn’t have come at a worse time, with the awakening of nature in Spring and the arrival of newborn wildlife. Thankfully our costs to repair the damage look to be low but incidents such as these are a massive set back to our work and our ability to provide the best possible habitats for Cornwall’s wildlife.

Lavender Parc, Carnkie eco-dome campsite concerns

A COUPLE behind an eco-dome camping site which use glass domes to house guests have moved to reassure people that the site is not being turned into a concrete jungle . Lavender Parc at Underlane in Carnkie near Helston has described itself as ‘Cornwall’s first open air hotel’. But concerns had been raised that the pods had been put up without planning permission and would change the shape of the village. One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “They’re trying to change the whole shape of an agricultural village. People live in a rural area because they enjoy the countryside. Stay in Truro if you want a concrete jungle, don’t come into the sticks and cover the greenfield with holiday lets.”
