Subscriber only Bank branches have been closing at their fastest rate in two decades as the pandemic pushed more customers toward digital banking. Since COVID-19 struck in early 2020 there have been 53 permanent shutdowns completed or scheduled for Queensland, according to bank figures and Finance Sector Union data. Nationally the number is almost 300. Temporary COVID-related closures of some bank branches are continuing, and hundreds of ATMs have disappeared in a real blow to communities , the union says. FSU national secretary Julia Angrisano said there had been a sharp rise in branch closures in the past two years and the number was growing at its fastest rate since the early 2000s.

I miss Michael Ratner. We all should.
I met Michael when we were both students at Columbia Law School in the late 60’s. He was smart and funny. I joined the student chapter of the National Lawyers Guild that he had helped establish. It was described in the yearbook as dedicated to the proposition that “America’s law schools and legal system should, for the first time, begin to respond to the needs of the masses of American people, and not the wishes of the Rep-Dem Party, the Mafia, and General Motors, its subsidiaries, and apologists.” Members of the student chapter sought to use the law “to eliminate militarism, imperialist wars, the growth of a police state, and to eradicate racism.” Michael designed his whole life with those goals in mind, and he was living up to his goals, achieving enormous success, until cancer stole him from us all too soon in May of 2016.

There is one new COVID-19 related death in Oregon, raising the state’s death toll to 2,441.
Oregon Health Authority reported 294 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 170,850.
The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across Oregon is 177, which is two fewer than Sunday. There are 48 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, which is two more than Sunday.
The new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases reported today are in the following counties: Baker (6), Benton (2), Clackamas (39), Clatsop (6), Columbia (5), Coos (2), Deschutes (23), Douglas (6), Jackson (11), Jefferson (4), Josephine (13), Lane (38), Lincoln (6), Linn (15), Marion (43), Morrow (1), Multnomah (54), Polk (4), Tillamook (3), Wasco (3), Washington (3) and Yamhill (7).
