The more we learn about Britain’s proposed new trade deal with Australia the more it becomes evident that ‘no deal’ would be a better outcome. As with many things in post-Brexit Britain reality does not remotely match the promises made in the pre-Brexit run-up.
The government promised British farmers that it would maintain, even increase, farm subsidies and uphold standards in the agri-food sector. The 2019 Tory manifesto promised: “in. our trade negotiations, we will not compromise on our high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards.” However, as the German military strategist Helmuth von Moltke once sagely noted, “No battle plan survives its first contact with the enemy.” It is clear that the above assurances have not survived their first encounter with the Australian negotiators.
