Cattle vaccine will help in battle against TB, says chief vet

Cattle vaccine will help in battle against TB, says chief vet >More in © David Hurst at Hurst Animal Health Cattle vaccination can become an important item in the toolbox in the battle to eradicate bovine TB in herds, the UK’s chief vet has insisted. Defra has announced that the first stage of field trials of the cattle Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine and diagnostic test to differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (Diva) are under way in England. Chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss said the trials on a cattle farm in Hertfordshire would test the specificity of the Diva test and gather safety data to check how it performs in the field. The test works by identifying proteins in infected cattle that are not present in uninfected animals.

If the field trials are successful, farmers and vets will move a step closer to being able to vaccinate their animals against the disease, helping to save thousands of cattle every year that would have otherwise been culled to prevent the spread of bTB to other herds. The skin test which will accompany the vaccine also represents a major breakthrough by enabling vets to identify cattle that have been vaccinated and those that are infected with the disease – to date this has not been possible.
