AgResearch – a Crown Research Institute developing science and technology for the agricultural sector – responded to the commission’s call for feedback on its draft advice, released in February. The commission took a conservative approach, only including proven technologies into its modelling of how emissions might fall in the future. For example, it included lower-methane sheep breeds but not cow breeds, since the bovine programme is only beginning. The commission also left a methane vaccine out of its calculations, because researchers are still trying to make the tech work. AgResearch agreed with this approach for the vaccine, but stressed the 3-NOP food additive had made enough progress to be included in the commission’s budgets.
