Israel and Saudi Arabia buy influence in Britain as the lobbying scandal grows

April 15, 2021 at 4:41 pm Corruption in Britain is reaching startling new heights as lobby scandals threaten to engulf the government in a tsunami of sleaze. Leading the way, it seems, are both Israel and Saudi Arabia, each ruthless in the pursuit of backdoor access to the highest echelons of power in order to get their own way. When Israel is involved in such activities, it is usually the Palestinians who pay the price demanded by right-wing, pro-Israel lobby groups. With the Saudis, though, it s usually a matter of vanity and saving face. Newspaper headlines are full of lobbying scandals at the moment involving former British Prime Minister David Cameron, and it seems that Theresa May s government was also targeted, at least according to a former minister. However, it is now clear that Boris Johnson is also coming under fire for his alleged links to sleaze and dodgy dealings.

Boris Johnson lobbied by Saudi prince

Boris Johnson intervened in a Saudi bid to buy a top English football club after he was personally lobbied by its crown prince. Mohammed Bin Salman urged him to correct and reconsider a wrong decision by the Premier League, which was accused of blocking a £300million takeover of Newcastle United, it emerged last night.  The angry crown prince warned the Prime Minister last year that Anglo-Saudi relations would be damaged unless it was reversed. Mr Johnson asked senior No10 aide Lord Eddie Lister, a Middle East expert, to take up the complaint. Lord Lister said he would investigate . The Saudis withdrew from the Newcastle deal last July – blaming the Premier League – to the fury of fans convinced the wealthy Middle Eastern state s investment could bring them new success.
