ECTAA, the European Travel Agent and Tour Operator Association, recently referred to Greece as an example of a country that restored consumer confidence and opened tourism up for business in the midst of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
In a review of the year, referring to the losses of travel in 2020 due to the pandemic, ECTAA highlighted that coordination and joint initiatives aimed at supporting the restart of travel and tourism are essential.
ECTAA added that since June, Greek authorities and travel organisations have been communicating in a clear way with the industry and consumers and implementing strict health and safety protocols.

The exhibitions took place in the last semester of 2020 and offered the opportunity to Greek companies to stay in touch with international markets, conduct B2B meetings and strengthen Greece’s presence abroad.
The application and selection process took place online. Moreover, the GNTO launched a pilot system offering the chance to participants to evaluate the fairs through digital questionnaires.
“That was one more collaboration with the private sector that contributed to the promotion of Greece’s advantages, in view of the crucial 2021 season for the recovery of its tourism sector,” Dimitris Fragakis added.
Greece as a tourism destination to the
Chinese market, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), during December 7-11, took part in a social media campaign held by
Sina Weibo, one of the largest social media platforms in China.
Titled “Weibo National Week”, the campaign was launched under the motto “The world is so big, I want to see it!”, and proved to be successful as its hashtag gathered over
210 million views and
211,000 reposts.
The campaign invited Chinese users to explore a number of destinations online and plan their next trip.
Representing Greece, the GNTO service in China posted photos and videos on the platform of Sina Weibo and its own social media about Greek destinations – including Astypalea – and cuisine.
Greek tourism startups that were announced winners of the
CapsuleT accelerator program will be showcased at the ITB Berlin 2021 virtual event to take place in March.
An initiative of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH), CapsuleT is Greece’s first travel and hospitality accelerator that was launched to support and promote Greek technology startups for tourism and hospitality and boost synergies to bring innovation to the country’s tourism sector.
