Raymond Lussier Insurance Agency of West Springfield, which was founded in 1975. And Greylock Insurance, the insurance arm of Greylock Federal Credit Union, has bought the Roger Butler Insurance Agency in Westfield, a fourth-generation family company founded in 1902. The purchases continue a trend of consolidation in an industry once dominated by long-established family-owned businesses. The Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents has 1,120 members today down from 1,241 in 2017. The overwhelming majority of that decrease is due to mergers and acquisition activity, said Nicholas A. Fyntrilakis, president and CEO of the agent’s association.

PITTSFIELD — Megan Whilden comes from Monterey, Calif., a coastal city with breathtaking scenery and often offbeat tendencies. She has lived in the Berkshires, another place with awesome scenery, for 20 years. And she has been known for coming up with some out-of-the box ideas. Case in point: Third Thursdays, Pittsfield s popular monthly downtown street festival, an idea that many thought wouldn t work when it debuted 14 years ago. Whilden, the first cultural development director in Pittsfield s history, is the executive director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College, a program with a curriculum geared toward older adults. Last spring, she took another chance with OLLI that paid off: Converting the senior citizens who attended OLLI s in-person classes and discussions to technology buffs who now can access those program through the Zoom platform.

Greylock To Accept PPP Applications

PITTSFIELD, Mass. As the only certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) located in Berkshire County, Greylock Federal Credit Union will be the first local lender allowed to accept applications for the next round of the Small Business Administration s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The online application will give priority to minority, underserved, veteran, and women-owned businesses as well as existing Greylock business members. They have reached out to a number of Berkshire County community partners to help get the word out about this opportunity. The recently passed Economic Aid Act included the funds to restart the PPP program with revisions intended to get the money into the hands of small local businesses. The US Treasury Department s network of CDFIs has been granted early access to the program to allow these small businesses first access to the funds.
