Ontario is preparing to vaccinate its way around the latest obstacle on the path to a post-pandemic world the Delta variant.
The province will speed up access to second doses of COVID-19 vaccines in parts of the province where rates of the more contagious Delta variant are highest, provincial officials said Thursday. Those include Halton, Peel, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph and York in the GTA and southern Ontario regions as well as Porcupine in northern Ontario. Delta is the name for the COVID-19 variant originally identified in India.

During a news conference at a Vaughan hospital, Ontario Premier Doug Ford makes an announcement and provides an update on his government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He is joined by provincial ministers Christine Elliott (Health) and Stephen Lecce (Education), as well as by the mayor of Vaughan, Maurizio Bevilacqua, and the president and CEO of Mackenzie Health, Altaf Stationwala. The premier announces a $125 million dollar investment to add over 500 critical care beds to hospitals in areas most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A portion of this funding will be dedicated to the temporary transition of Cortelluci Hospital into a resource supporting the province’s COVID-19 response. Ford also comments on the expected delay in deliveries of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine doses.(no interpretation)
