The crash and shooting took place near a security checkpoint frequently used by senators and staff, however most lawmakers had already left to return home for the holiday weekend. According to acting Capitol Police chief Yogananda D. Pittman, after crashing, the driver exited his car and lunged at other officers with a knife. He was shot and killed by authorities and died at a nearby hospital.
