Former congressman praises life, service of former Killeen mayor

To the Editor: I hope future generations will study the life story of Raul “Roy” Villaronga — it is the story of a true patriot who courageously served his country in combat and then his beloved community of Killeen —as a council member, mayor, judge and community volunteer. It was a blessing and inspiration to know him. When I had the honor of representing Killeen and Fort Hood in the U.S. Congress, I saw first-hand Roy’s dedicated servant leadership. Among countless lasting legacies, Roy played a key role in leading the community effort to fully utilize Fort Hood after it was down-sized to a one-division installation.

Killeen airport to receive nearly $1 8 million in coronavirus relief funds

The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport was awarded $1,796,310 in federal grants to combat the spread of coronavirus at the airport and provide economic relief, the office of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced on Monday. The funding comes through the Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020, which Cornyn voted in favor of in December, according to a new release. “Quality transportation services are vital for boosting local economic growth, and now, more than ever, we must ensure airports have the support they need to get Texans from point A to point B,” Cornyn said in the release. “I will continue doing everything I can to bolster our response to these unprecedented hardships, and I look forward to seeing the impact this funding will have on Killeen and the rest of our great state.”

His latest task was in Michigan just last week, however the trip was longer than he expected it was going to be. “I spent the night in a hotel, and throughout the evening my flights kept getting canceled and rebooked,” he explained. “[The] last rebook I got was for Sunday.”
