Prairie View A&M University gets $50M from MacKenzie Scott, largest in its history

Prairie View A&M University received $50 million from writer and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott the largest donation in the historically black college’s 144-year history, according to a university release.
The university, which was given the choice on how to use the funds, will create a $10 million Panther Success Grant program, a financial aid initiative to assist juniors and seniors facing financial challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is a historic gift for Prairie View, coming at a time when the university had already decided and begun to invest heavily in key areas to strengthen its academic programs and improve student success. The timing of this gift could therefore not be better,” President Ruth J. Simmons said in a written statement.

ATLANTA - Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated an unrestricted $15 million gift to Clark Atlanta University - the single largest private gift in the university s history.
Scott, a philanthropist and novelist who was formerly married to Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, donated as part of a four-month mission. In total, Scott donated nearly $4.2 billion in gifts to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.
In a statement, Clark Atlanta President Georgia T. French Jr. said that he was extremely honored to receive the gift, thanking Scott for her investment into the university.

The MARTA Board of Directors announced recently that Leah Ward Sears, former Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court and partner at Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLC, will serve as its new General Counsel. Sears will provide guidance to the board on a variety of legal, statutory, and ethical matters during a five-year term.
“My fellow board members and I are excited to have such an experienced jurist and attorney to assist us,” said MARTA Board Chair Freda Hardage. “I have long been an admirer of Justice Sears and look forward to seeking her guidance and leadership during any complex issues we may face.”
