There is good news on the vaccine front. In the ongoing war against COVID-19, Clark County has launched a significant offensive this week.
But while progress is being made, the truth remains that a vaccine is only as effective as the number of people willing to receive it.
National public opinion polls have indicated increasing interest in vaccinations; a Gallup survey from mid-February found 71 percent are willing to receive shots, up from 65 percent in late December. Those numbers must continue to climb if our communities are to reach the widespread immunity required to tamp down the disease.
Clark County will open its second large-scale COVID-19 vaccination site on Friday, about six weeks after the state opened the county s first mass vaccination site at the Clark County Event Center at The Fairgrounds near Ridgefield.

The Clark County Event Center announced Wednesday that it has contracted with Beaches Restaurant to provide “onsite concessions, catering and general beverage and food services” at the center, starting immediately.
The event center is located at the Clark County Fairgrounds near Ridgefield. Beaches is owned by Vancouver restaurateur Mark Matthias and has two locations, one in Vancouver and one at Portland International Airport.
Beaches food will be available at the concession area in the main exhibition hall once in-person events resume. In a press release from the event center, Matthias said that he would upgrade some of the equipment at the center to allow for freshly made menu items and a new strategy for guest services.
Data shows that the low administration rate in Clark County has been caused by a shorting of vaccines from the state. The county has received 3 percent fewer doses than similarly sized Spokane County.
