Glasgow groups delighted by Milton community hub bid

PLANS for a new community hub in Milton was met with joy from residents. A new hub – still at its very early stages – is tipped to be built on the site of the former St Ambrose Primary School in Stornoway Street, which now lies vacant. It is hoped that the hub, which would see a number of services based in the one building, such as a youth service, voluntary opportunities and family support services as well as a base for the Glasgow Caledonian University’s Common Good scheme, will improve residents’ access to vital amenities currently lacking in the area.

Highly skilled care workers could earn more in supermarket

Scots workers who were interviewed ‘frequently’ said they could earn more working in a supermarket SCOTS care workers have told of feeling devalued,  policed and demoralised that they could earn more money working in a supermarket. Employees said they took pride in the work they do supporting the elderly and younger adults with complex needs but felt demoralised that independent of skills and length of service, there is an awareness that they are held in lower esteem by the public than NHS workers. The authors of a damning review into the social care sector which was published this week argues that staff are notably disadvantaged because it is predominantly a job done by women - around 83% of workers are female.

The case for making doctoral supervision collaborative

The case for making doctoral supervision collaborative In the course of my research career, I have written relatively extensively on the topic of food, but only now have I realised that the consumption of food can be extended to the consumption of knowledge. In a recent paper entitled “Doctoral supervision challenges: What do we know and what can we do about it?”, which I presented at the sixth annual online Researcher Education and Development Scholarship (REDS) conference organised by the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, I highlighted a three-point challenge for the PhD supervision experience: recruitment, retention/progression and completion, which I would map to the phases of a three-course meal – the entrée/appetiser, main course and dessert.
