Gardner-Webb hosts vaccination clinic
More than 800 people were able to get their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday at Gardner-Webb University.
The college hosted a vaccination clinic for students and community members this week, putting shots in the arms of 809 people, 350 of which were students. It s a good day for us, for our community, said William Downs, Gardner-Webb president.
Gardner-Webb announced its intention to return to a pre-COVID environment as much as possible next school year. Getting students vaccinated, Downs said, is indispensable for that vision. We ve got to attack this thing aggressively. If we simply waited until July or August as we were poised to open the doors, it would be too late. We ve got to turn the corner right now. This is the day to make that happen, he said.
Vaccine clinic slated for Gardner-Webb community

Gardner-Webb University and the Cleveland County Public Health Center in Shelby, N.C., are collaborating to provide a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on campus in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center.
The first dose of Pfizer’s vaccine will be available Wednesday to University students, faculty and staff in time slots between 2 and 5 p.m. A second dose is required in three weeks. Participants will automatically be scheduled in the same location and same time slot to receive their second dose on April 30. In addition, vaccine appointments will be available to members of the community until 2 p.m. on both days.
Foundation donates $50k for vaccines in Cleveland County

To help the flow of COVID-19 vaccines in Cleveland County, a recently-formed nonprofit is pledging $50,000 to the effort.
Hospice Cleveland County Foundation is making the donation to the Cleveland County Public Health Center to support the ongoing mass drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine clinics. The money will be used to support the infrastructure and logistics of the clinics, as well as an education campaign.
“Nothing epitomizes the mission of Hospice Cleveland County Foundation further than being able to help protect residents of Cleveland County from COVID-19, as vaccination plays a critical role in helping us all get back to normal,” said Emily Arey, executive director of the foundation.

1. As of Wednesday, 10,337 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Cleveland County, and 217 have lost their lives from it, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
The Cleveland County Health Department reported earlier this week that 9,873 people have recovered, and there are seven Cleveland County residents who are hospitalized with COVID-19.
