Former Quapaw Chairman Disqualified from 2021 Election, Could Face More Severe Punishment

Former Quapaw Nation Chairman John Berrey. Former Quapaw Tribal Chairman John Berrey was barred from running from office by the Tribal Nation s Business Committee. The decision was made earlier this week after someone challenged his run for vice-chairman in the upcoming elections. Berrey was the Quapaw Nation s chairman for 20 years until he lost last summer to newcomer Joseph Byrd. Then, a few months later, information from an audit alleged Berrey gave bonuses and pay raises totaling in the millions to himself and others without approval from the Business Committee. Berrey, along with former secretary treasurer Tamara Smiley Reeves filed a defamation suit in Cleveland County District Court in February 2021 against Byrd and others on the Business Committee. The suit was dismissed, and Berrey is facing 11 criminal charges including embezzlement and conspiracy in Quapaw Nation tribal court. He could face disenrollment from the Tribal Nation if he is convicted.

According to a court filing, Martinez was additionally charged May 18 with aggravated trafficking in illegal drugs after officers found 35 plastic bags or bundles of a crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine inside a storage tub in a storage unit in the 900 block of Southeast 19th Street in Moore. Each bag weighed about one pound.

Carlos Ruiz, 36, of Noble, was charged the same day with a felony count of keeping a place, equipment and facility for cockfighting in concert and together with Nancy Torres-Lugo. According to a court affidavit, the Cleveland County Sheriff s Office responded April 7 to the 14800 block of 26B Street in Noble in reference to an alleged cockfight and animal cruelty complaint.

Kevin Murnan worked for NRHS for 19 years, but was fired after commenting on a news article about a Black man who had been arrested for shooting a five-year-old white boy to death. “Get a tall tree and a short piece of rope,” his comment on the Facebook post reads, according to court records. Murnan was fired in August 2020 and filed a tort claim against the hospital.
