NEW PHILADELPHIA Verrelle Wyatt passed through a lot in the year before he became the first man to cross the finish line at the 14th annual Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Run for Home half marathon on Sunday.
In the past year, he caught COVID-19, had hernia surgery and became the father to a girl who is now 9 months old.
Since life settled down, Wyatt has been able to run two or three times a week. I m just grateful to finally try to get some peace into my life, a little bit better, and get back to running, he said.
The 34-year-old former collegiate runner from Akron last raced about two years ago.

Easter Sunday was anything but a relaxing day for Pam Swarny, the Director of Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.
Swarny spent the day serving as the pharmacist in charge of the State of Ohio’s COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Site located at the Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University. Swarny has been overseeing the pharmacy operations for the COVID-19 vaccinations being given at Union Hospital over the past several weeks, and volunteered to serve in the same role for the day as Cleveland Clinic’s designated pharmacist in charge at the large-scale clinic.
“It was the same process that we are used to following here at Dover, but you just multiply the patients, workers and activity by 20 fold,” said Swarny. “I was extremely impressed by the efficiency of the entire operation as patients were in and out of the Wolstein Center in about 20 to 25 minutes.”

The United Way of Tuscarawas County celebrated the conclusion of its 78th annual fundraising campaign with a virtual awards ceremony sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital. Bob Alsept, superintendent of Buckeye Career Center and 2020 United Way campaign chair, announced a record breaking campaign total of $604,439.98.
“This is an amazing total. As a person who was born in Tuscarawas County and has spent most of my life in this area, I am not surprised. I have seen this county pull together time after time. This campaign is no different. The pandemic has created uncertainty and great need,” stated Alsept. “It would have been understandable for the people of our area to hold back and conserve resources, but residents gave more than ever before. They dug deeper to help their neighbor. Included in this total is over $82,000 donated to the Covid-19 Community Response Fund. This fund ensured the county’s most vulnerable families and individuals had the su

DOVER Jennifer Maurer, a nurse, was the first employee of Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as the hospital began immunizing its employees on Wednesday morning.
A total of 70 caregivers were vaccinated Wednesday, according to Darrin Lautenschleger, director of community relations at the hospital. Additional vaccinations of hospital caregivers are being scheduled and will continue according to the doses that will be available and delivered to the hospital through Cleveland Clinic, he said.
The process will continue through the next several weeks.
During Phase 1 of the state s vaccination distribution plan, vaccine supply will be limited, and Ohio will focus on vaccinating those who wish to be vaccinated in the critical Phase 1A groups, which include healthcare workers, EMS responders and residents and staff at nursing homes.
