Volleyball splits with EIU

The Murray State volleyball team took on Eastern Illinois University at Racer Arena on Sunday, March 14, and Monday, March 15. The Racers split the series, taking the first game 3-1 and dropping the second 3-1.
Game One
Prior to the game, Murray State honored senior setter Callie Anderton and senior middle blocker Katirah Johnson for their dedication and contribution to the program. Anderton came into the game with a career-total of 1,691 assists, with 352 assists in the 2021 season. Johnson, who has not played throughout the 2021 season because of a torn ACL, has a career total of 383 kills.

Conventional farming practices have eroded much of the topsoil from a region of the Midwest known as the corn belt, according to a recent study.
The corn belt, which stretches from western Illinois to the Dakotas, produces billions of bushels of corn, soybeans and other grains annually.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst study used satellite imagery and data from soil samples collected from 28 locations. Most of the soil was collected from Iowa and Minnesota.
“The main result was that a third of the landscape of the cultivated area no longer has any A-horizon (soil),” said Evan Thaler, a geoscientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who co-authored the study with scientists Issac Larsen and Qian Yu.

Western Kentucky University has named Robert “Bud” U. Fischer Jr. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs beginning July 1.
Dr. Fischer is the dean of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
“Dr. Fischer has a record of success in elevating the universities where he has held leadership positions,” WKU President Timothy C. Caboni said. “His experience with applied learning, improvements in retention and graduation rates and familiarity with growing sponsored research all are relevant to continuing WKU’s climb to greater heights as we implement our strategic plan.”

I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Robert “Bud” U. Fischer, Dean, College of Basic and Applied Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University, has accepted our offer to become WKU’s next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective July 5, 2021.
Prior to joining MTSU in 2012, Dr. Fischer was chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; associate chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Illinois University and a faculty member at the University of South Carolina Aiken and State University College at Buffalo. Dr. Fischer has a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of South Carolina, a master’s degree in environmental biology from State University College at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in ecology from State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York.
